Dakota Brummel

CU Boulder SECond Mission AmeriCorps VISTA

Dakota is a VISTA at The University of Colorado at Boulder. He grew up in Northwest Indiana, right outside of Chicago. After High school Dakota joined the Marine Corps where he served 6 years: 3 years he served as a Huey/Cobra mechanic at Camp Pendleton and Afghanistan, followed by 3 years as an Embassy Security Guard in Cambodia and Venezuela. After his service, he returned to Indiana but wasn't happy with his life there and decided to make Colorado his home in 2015.

Dakota chose to be a VISTA because he felt as though his transition from military to higher education could have gone a lot smoother, and he wanted to ensure that future generations had an easier transition. He believes assisting veterans in school is important, and wants to help ensure those who are struggling do not drop out after their first semester or year. He also feels there is value in helping individuals finish what they start, and thoroughly enjoyes helping veterans succeed in that aspect.

Dakota is closing in on his first year as a VISTA where he bas been an active support and member of Student Veterans of America, piloted a summer Bridge Program and has offered several academic related workshops (such as FAFSA support, and Academic Coaching). Dakota will be continuing his service with SECond Mission for a second term.

His hobbies are constantly evolving, but he currently enjoys traveling, camping, going to the gym, binging Netflix, and hiking.

----Viktor Frankl
