Astrid Monar

UCCS SECond Mission AmeriCorps VISTA

Astrid is a VISTA at University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. Astrid grew up in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and moved to Colorado Springs shortly after graduating college. Astrid is currently pursuing her Master's Degree in Public Administration, at UCCS. She hopes to potentially use the skills gained through her AmeriCorps experience in combination with her degree to become the director of a non-profit organization someday.

Astrid decided to become a VISTA after hearing a lot of positive feedback about AmeriCorps VISTA from her friends who had served. She learned about SECond Mission from the AmeriCorps website and decided that it was a group she wanted to be part of. Working with veterans is important to Astrid, because she feels they are a very deserving population with tremendous potential. Her work at the Veteran Center aims to help veterans achieve success in their academic careers through the tutoring program she facilitates, the research she conducts for the Military and Veterans Pathways to Success (MVPS) project, and other programs she is working on developing. She has found wonderful success in her most recent project: a cooking class for student veterans.

Astrid enjoys food, fitness, and anything outdoors.  On the weekends, you can find her on the river rafting, rock climbing cliffs, or hiking up mountains!
