Dr. Veronica House is Associate Faculty Director for Service-Learning and Outreach in the Program for Writing and Rhetoric at the University of Colorado at Boulder.  As founder of the University’s Writing Initiative for Service and Engagement, she created the first service-learning Writing and Rhetoric courses for first-year students and has coordinated the Program for Writing and Rhetoric’s transformation into one of the only writing programs in the nation to have integrated service-learning throughout its lower and upper division courses.  She has worked with faculty at colleges and universities across the country to design service-learning courses and programs.  Her teaching and scholarship interests focus on food justice and sustainability initiatives.


This isn’t a story about war, about the wounds—both visible and invisible—that soldiers are left to carry after war, or the trauma that goes hand in hand with being a soldier.  You won’t find details of battle or unsettling imagery in this tale.  This story is about strength and determination beyond the experience of war; this story embodies the power of self-identity as a veteran.  It’s a story of integrating the person that you once were with the person you are now...
